Food Truck Digital. Assigned 4/30, due 5/5 - MAJOR

Last time we worked on the Food Truck project, you used Canva to come up with some plans and answered a bunch of question about what goes into a Food Truck, the history of them, and what you might expect to see if you worked in a food truck. You designed a logo, and you created some sort of design for the side of your truck.

Today, we are going to put all of that together in to a final package. You will again use Canva to complete this task.

Here is what I expect to see on your final project:

1. A well designed and thought out logo with a graphic and text (the truck's name). I would like 2 versions of this logo, one that has the full logo with the name of the truck, and another that is just text-based.

1. A menu with a minimum of the following:

    5 main dishes

    5 side dishes

    3 desserts

3. Two sides of your Food Truck. Your truck could have some sort of roof mounted symbol

1 side with the serving area

1 side with the non-serving side

Below are some samples for you to look at so you know what I am looking for. Ignore the numbers at the bottom, those are irrelevant. Do not include those on your piece.

Food Trucks Turned In

You have all of today to complete this task. You will turn this in on your Google Site on a new Subpage called Food Truck Project. Make sure to PUBLISH when you are done.

The next part of this assignment is to make a cardboard food truck in class. There are five sample trucks on the table in the middle of the classroom. Sometime today, go look at one closer. You will work on these individually, but you can certainly help a friend, offer advice, or even help each other with your INDIVIDUAL trucks.

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN CARDBOARD BOX

I have some cardboard BUT you will need to cut it and that can be tedious. You may want to find your own cardboard to do this assignment. In addition, you may want to add things to your truck that I do not have. You will need to provide those things.

PLEASE BRING ANYTHING YOU WANT FROM HOME TO HELP CREATE YOUR TRUCK.

I will have:

Glue

Scissors

Markers

Tape

Construction paper

SOME poster board (white only)

I will also be able to cut down a cardboard box for you using a box cutter. You will need cut carefully mark your box for the cuts you want.

This Food Truck MUST BE 3D.

Please ask if you have any questions about this second project

Food Truck Preview

Let's start by looking at the history of Food Trucks.

First, make a new subpage on your Google Site, title it Food Truck Preview.

Click here to learn about Food Trucks: https://prestigefoodtrucks.com/2020/03/history-of-food-trucks-and-how-theyve-shaped-america/

4. What were the three biggest reasons for the "Food Truck Revolution" in 2008?

5. What did the website indicate would be some of the future developments in food truck use?

Now, let's look at what you might need inside of a food truck to make it really go?

Click here to learn what items should be in a food truck: https://blog.clover.com/food-truck-equipment-essentials-every-food-truck-needs/

6. List the top 10 items that every food truck needs to be successful?

Find a photo of your favorite food truck in Austin and share it with me

It's time to start thinking about what you might serve at your food truck:

Check out this site to learn about the top profitable food truck items: https://www.partstown.com/about-us/most-profitable-food-truck-items

7. What similarities do you see in the top-10 items?

8. What are your two favorites?

Find images for your two favorite food truck foods and share it with me.

You will have to come up with a menu of items for your truck, so take a look at this site to get your thinking: https://pos.toasttab.com/blog/on-the-line/how-to-make-a-food-truck-menu

9. What is the importance of categorizing your menu?

10. Besides names of your items, what else will you need to make sure you do so your patrons know what they are eating?

11. Which of the 10 example food truck menu's did you think sounded the best? WHY?

Find a food truck menu image, take a screen shot and share it with me.

Part of this assignment will include coming up with design for the outside of your truck. There are TONS of things you have to think about when it comes to designing your truck, and the following website has a ton of them. I don't expect you to memorize all of these, but steal some ideas that you might want to bring into your truck:

https://pos.toasttab.com/blog/on-the-line/food-truck-design-ideas

12. There are three distinct areas that the website suggests that you focus on, what are those three areas? (these are near the top of the article)

13. List the three design ideas (out of 20) that caught your attention and explain how you might carry out that idea in your food truck.

Finally, you will need to come up with a logo for your truck. There are so many options out there, but this site has a ton of them for you to think about:

https://99designs.com/inspiration/logos/food-truck

14. Pick out your favorite four logos, take screen shots and share them here.

15. Describe why you picked those four logos. Use graphic design terms to explain what caught your attention. Was it color, shape, texture, graphics, what? Explain fully what you liked about these logos (2 sentences minimum).

Now lets have some fun thinking about what your truck might look like digitally.

Download this file, open it in Canvas, and come up with a beginning look for your truck. You will each come up with your own concept and ideas and this first part is the digital part of the project. You will have one class period to complete the next assignment which you will see more of tomorrow.

You can use these files, or you can use the elements button in Canva and search for Food Truck. Please make sure you get a blank version.

Add color, think about a logo, colors, name, menu, menu items, etc.

  11. For each of your items, use the background remover tool in Canva to get rid of the background so that only the item itself is visible. This way you can see if it works with your wall color or note.
  12. Resize items to scale relative to each other once you have selected everything so you can get a better idea of how everything would work together.
  13. Move the items around so that they are clearly displayed on the mood board and it is easy to view all items.

Movie Poster Project. Assigned 4/7, due 4/10 - MAJOR

You will have three class periods to complete this project and then we will move onto the Interior Design Unit.

Your assignment is to create a Movie Poster for any movie style (sci-fi, drama, action, rom-com, etc) of your choosing. We will be using Canva to create this product. You will make up everything for this movie, but you should use real-world companies, actors, etc. You DO NEED TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN MOVIE NAME!!

The first thing you need to do is to decide which movie you want to make a poster for. Once you get into Canva, you will find almost everything you need to make this poster, including photos. Once you have picked out a movie, think about what the main photo might be...think in general terms. Now let's get logged into Canva.

Make sure you are signed into your Google Account through AISD.

In the upper right corner select Create a Design (it is a bright purple box).

At the bottom of that pop-up box, click the + sign and create a custom size canvas.

When that box opens, change it to INCHES and select 27x40, 40x60 or 24x36 (the three most common sizes for Movie Posters.

Now go to the ELEMENTS option and do a search for an appropriate photo for your movie. Look for a photo that you can use as your dominant image.

Once you pick out a photo, make sure it covers the entire space you selected.

Now start adding to your poster. You should think about a few things:

1. The individual items you will need on your poster. The list is below.

2. The "MOOD" and the "elements" that you learned about last class that are generally associated with that genera.

3. The colors you are going to use for your poster.

4. The fonts you will use.

5. The layout of your poster.

I strongly recommend you do a Google search for movie posters and find one to use as a model.

Here are the required elements for your poster (you can use the elements button on Canva to get almost all of these). You will need to make text boxes for all places where you plan to include text.

1. Title of the movie

2. Main photo

3. Stars of the film

4. Directors name

5. Release date

6. Review data or Slogans or Logos

7. Social Media / website

8. Rating of the film (PG, PG-13, R)

Take your time and use the next two classes to make as detailed a Movie Poster as possible. You are creating this on a very large palette - so you should zoom in and out to get the scale proper.

Remember what you learned with the magazine covers. Think about Scale, Proportion, color and font use and placement of all items.

Here is one I created. It took me about an hour, so I think you will find that if you put in a little time and effort, you too will make something that looks like a real movie poster.

On Friday I will give you instructions on how to turn this in, and you will also have a reflection to complete once you are finished.

Movie Poster Preview Activity. Assigned 4/2, due 4/7 end of period - Minor

Today we will be doing a short preview assignment for the second, and final Graphic Design Project of the unit - creating a Movie Poster.

Although we won't be taking a photo for the background of this image, I still think we can totally recreate something that will work. This isn't about creating the "perfect" poster, it is about learning what elements make up a good poster, and doing our very best to make something that LOOKS like a movie poster, even if the image in the background isn't the greatest.

To get this started, let's do some research on Movie Posters themselves.

On your Google Site, please create a new subpage and title it Movie Poster Preview. Then follow along from website to website and answer the following questions:

Let's start here: https://webflow.com/blog/movie-poster-design

1. What is the name of the first movie that had a poster made specifically for that film?

Now go here: https://www.firstshowing.net/2017/check-out-this-infographic-about-the-evolution-of-movie-poster-design/

2. Look through the 11 "era's" (1900-1909, 1910-29, 1930-1939, etc..) for movie posters. Look at the two posters from each era. Pick 3 era's and complete the following tasks:

Take a screenshot of the posters for the 3 eras you picked and share those as well.

3. Why did you pick this era? What appealed to you about these posters?

There are some very famous artists associated with movie posters, let's take a look at some of them:

https://postergrind.com/top-11-film-movie-poster-artists-of-all-time/

4. List your top-5 from the website and explain why you picked them.

5. Of the 31 Movie Posters shared on this site, how many of those movies have you seen? Take a screen shot of your favorite poster from this website and share it as well.

6. What do you think makes these people considered the top poster artists of all time? What did they do that set them apart from the rest? (if you would like to do some other research on this, feel free to do your own google search)

Now let's start planning to make your own poster (which will happen beginning next class):

https://design.tutsplus.com/articles/movie-poster-design-101-the-anatomy-of-a-movie-poster--cms-35852

7. What are the 3 traditional sizes for movie posters?

8. What are some common elements found on every movie poster, according to the website?

9. What computer programs are used to make movie posters?

10. According to the article, there are different genres with different "moods" for the types of movies the posters are made for. They broadly outline five different movie types. For each type, please write two sentences explaining what elements are used for that type that differentiate them from the other styles.

Action and Thriller

Comedy

Horror

Drama

Sci-Fi

11. Do a quick Google Image Search for Movie Posters and find your all-time favorite movie poster (you might have better luck picking the movie first and searching by movie name for a great poster). take a screen shot and share it.

NEXT TIME

Between now and next class, please pick a genera, and a movie or two from that genera that you might want to try to make a movie poster for. We will dive into a little bit more of the expectations next time. We will be using Canva to make these and you will have a lot of flexibility on using pre-created elements found in Canva. Remember, this isn't about making a perfect movie poster, it is about incorporating the elements found on a good poster, and understanding what would make a great one if we used some of the programs found above.

Placement of all elements (where should those things go) - should the price be located right in the middle of the image? Where do bar codes go and how big should they be? Dates? Use your sample images.
Font readability - pick good, legible fonts
Creativity - did you make text work better by creating multiple boxes for a single headline? Do you pick a font package? How well did you match your image up with your title and teasers (cover lines/headlines) and other elements?
Is it smart to put a box around any text? Look at examples

You can turn in your magazine covers at anytime today. I should have two of them from you. ONE OF THEM must have a cutout or a text overlap.

Here is how you turn them in. You must follow these directions carefully and do this correctly.

Your Magazine Cover Projects (TWO OF THEM) are due at the end of the period. Here is how you should turn them in:

1. In the upper right hand corner of Canva, click the SHARE button:

2. Find the DOWNLOAD option, click the triangle to the right:

3. Increase the size of the PNG, by moving the slider to 2.75:

4. CLICK DOWNLOAD and wait until it appears in your Download folder:

5. Move the file to your desktop, and put it on your Google Site on a new subpage called Magazine Covers. DO NOT DRAG IT ONTO THE PAGE. Use the DOWNLOAD Option. I need to see these a little larger. To do this, on the new subpage, select IMAGES and UPLOAD:

6. You will need to show the computer where you saved the file when you use the UPLOAD function, but that will place the image at a larger size so I can see your work.

7.  REFLECTION - answer these below your magazine covers

1. What aspects of your magazine covers turned out well? Explain your answer.

2. What aspects of your magazine covers didn't turn out as well as you hoped? Explain your answer.

3. Explain the parts of the project, as a whole, that were easier to complete?

4. Explain what parts of the project, as a whole, were more difficult to complete?

5. How would you rate the Canva program in terms of ease of use?

6. Did you use any other programs or websites to complete your task? Please list them and what you used them to do.

7. If you could do your project again, what would you change or do again?

8. On a scale of 1-10 how much did you enjoy this project? Explain your answer and what you would recommend the teacher do to make the project better for future students

Once you have both images on your Google Site and COMPLETED THE REFLECTION, you are done with this project. Next time I see you, we will be creating a Movie Poster. It will be very similar and I think you will like the project.

Magazine Cover Work Day 1 and 2. Assigned 3/24, due 3/27 - Magazine Cover #1 MINOR, Magazine Cover #2 MAJOR

Magazine Covers

Let's get started on these magazine covers. I have decided that we are just going to use Canva to do these covers. So....go here:

https://www.canva.com/

I strongly recommend that you do a Google Image search for Magazine Covers and find some samples that you might use. You will have 3 in-class days to make 2 covers (including today).

You should start mocking up your cover mentally - come up with a name, make a date line, start looking for a bar code or making one, starting to think about headlines (called cover lines in the magazine world), colors, design elements you may want to include in your magazine cover. Look at your samples. You should be making an Image-based cover. You should have multiple cover lines. You should be careful and plan for color AND font use. It should not look like the crayon box vomited on the page, and the text should legible. We will talk more about this over the next two classes.

You MUST use your portrait for one of these covers and your self-portrait for the other.

Your Magazine Cover MUST include the following:

You will need to complete the following:

A. Magazine name

Think carefully about the font you use

You may not use the name of a real magazine (except on accident) - so please get creative!!

B. A teaser / cover line (headline type description) for the main story.

You will need at least 3-5 other cover lines on your cover.

C. Pricing and date information and a bar code (appropriately sized!!)If you want to do some fun things with your image, like putting text over your photo or making a cut-out, here are some tutorials:
If you want to try to add a second or even third photo to duplicate a magazine cover you like, go for it.

You will be making TWO covers over the next couple of classes, and they will need to look different from each other. The easiest way to make these look different from each other is to do some fun treatments with the photo and the title of your magazine.

First, you could do a cutout in Canva and remove part of the background of your image. Like this one:

This can be done in Canva. You can do a google search and type in, how do I do a cutout in Canva. Here is a link to one I found (I hope it works for you):

I am sure there are more tutorials out there - see if you can find one.

The other thing you can do is called a text overlap. With this, you place SOME of your text behind the image. This can also be done in Canva.

Here is an example:

Again, you can just do a Google search and type in how do I put text behind an image in Canva.

Here is a link to one I found (again, I hope it works for you):

For ONE of your covers, you must do one of the two options above. There are other ways to do these two options and the simplest program to use to do them is Photoshop. If you are comfortable in Photoshop, it is available to you and I can help you get it open on your computer. There are lots of tutorials out there that will help you with these two things if you decide to use Photoshop. Find a good tutorial for them.

Portraits and Self-Portrait Turn in and Magazine Cover Preview. Assigned 3/10, due 3/12 - Portraits/selfports = MAJOR, magazine cover preview Minor (last grade of the 3rd 9 weeks)

FIRST

Please create a new Google Site subpage and call it Portrait and Self-Portrait and share your favorites. I need a total of TWO PHOTOS. One must be a portrait, the other must be self-portrait. Make sure you size them so they are bigger so I can see them. You do that by holding the shift & command key and grab the lower right corner and dragging it. This is a MAJOR GRADE, so make sure you do it NOW!!

Magazine Cover Preview

This assignment consists of three parts. Please do them on ONE GOOGLE SITE SUBPAGE called magazine cover preview.

Part 1 - Magazine tips

After you shoot your portrait and self-portrait, you will use them as the central element of a mock magazine cover design that will occupy a page of an InDesign document.

To get this process started, you need to learn a little about magazine cover design.

Go to the link below:

https://blog.flipsnack.com/how-to-design-professional-magazine-covers/

1.  On your google site tell me 5 things you should be thinking about when you design your magazine cover.

Part 2 - Best magazine covers 2018

Next, go here and look at some great designs:

https://www.canva.com/learn/magazine-cover-design/

Look at and read about ALL 50 designs. Make a new text box on you subpage and do the following:

Some of these magazines do not have portraits on the cover. But many do.

2. Pick your 3 favorite covers with a PORTRAIT on it, take a screenshot and share them with me on your Google Site.

3. Copy and paste the description under the cover on the website.

4. Write a 75-125 word critique of the portrait on the cover. Write about what is communicated about the people in the portrait and how this is communicated. You may consider composition, lighting, exposure etc.

Part 3 - Magazines Part II

You also need to know a little more information about the types of magazine covers that have been used through the years. Here are the most common types:

Cover types

1. Image Based
2. Illustration Based
3. Type Based
4. Concept Based

Here is the description and some examples of these types of magazine covers:

5. On your Google Site, write a short (50-150 word) explanation of what the main attributes of each of the four types are. Use your own words, and DO NOT copy and paste.

6. Finally, answer this question: what is the relationship between words and photos on magazine covers and why is this important?

Portrait and self-portrait shoot. Assigned 3/6, due 3/10 - MAJOR

Today you will partner up with a few people to go out of the classroom to take a few pictures. You will need to come back to class with TWO IMAGES that you like.

One MUST BE a portrait of someone else. This can be formal or informal. You can pose them, or just take a photo of them. Make sure they are IN FOCUS and that you shoot VERTICALLY. Leave some room/space above their heads if possible.

The other MUST BE a self-portrait. You will have a tripod and I will show you how to use the timer. You MUST push the button yourself, and then run and get into the photo. Make sure this photo is IN FOCUS and that you shoot VERTICALLY. Leave some room/space above your head if possible. YOUR FRIENDS CANNOT TAKE THIS PHOTO!!

For both of these, be creative if you can. Find good places to take photos, especially if you plan to pose your model.

Think about the BACKGROUND - what's behind you? Do you want that stuff in the photo?

Think about the POSE - do you want it to be more formal? Or would you like something fun and playful?

Make sure there is good LIGHT so that we can see you.

You will be in small groups and you will have 45 minutes or so to get these photos taken.

Remember you must have ONE PHOTO that you took of another person and ONE PHOTO that you took of yourself. NO CHEATING!!!

I will show you a trick to know who took what photos.

Portraits and self-portraits preview. Assigned 3/5, due 3/6 - Minor

 Self Portrait and Portraits Preview

As we get ready to take photos soon on our new assignment, self-portrait and portrait photography. I thought you might want to look at some ideas and get something more than just looking at some photos. With that in mind - go take a look at these FOUR websites.

http://digital-photography-school.com/10-ways-to-take-stunning-portraits

and

http://digital-photography-school.com/tips-portrait-photography

http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photo-tips/portrait-photography-tips/

http://shutterbug.com/refreshercourse/portrait_tips/197/

After looking at these, find what you think are the best 2 or 3 tips and copy and paste them into a new post on your Google Site on a new subpage called Portraits and Self-portraits preview. (I don’t need 2-3 tips from each site, but 2-3 total, but please look at all four sites).

When you go out to shoot these types of photos, there are three main types of portraits, the environmental portrait, a self-portrait and a casual portrait. Let's go find some examples of these types of images. On your Google Site subpage called Portraits and Self-portraits preview please do the following:

Google image search “Environmental portrait” and pick out 2 that you really like and post them on your Google Site. Tell me what you liked about the photo and why you picked it in a sentence or two.

Google image search “photography self portrait” and pick out 2 that you really like and post them on your Google Site. Tell me what you liked about the photo and why you picked it in a sentence or two.

Google image search “casual portrait” and pick out 2 that you really like and post them on your Google Site. Tell me what you liked about the photo and why you picked it in a sentence or two.

Next class you will have a camera in your possession and a partner to go out and take some photos with. You will be required to take a portrait of your partner, and then you will each take a self-portrait (THIS MEANS YOU HAVE TO PUSH THE BUTTON AND GO GET IN THE PHOTO ALL ON YOUR OWN, your partner cannot push the button for you!!).

Animation Project #2. Posted 2/5, due 2/19 - Multiple grades

For animation project #2, I am going to flip things a little bit. The focus of the project is to again create a short stop-motion video but this time try to eclipse 20 seconds. That means at 15 frames per second you will need at least 300 photos!!

You will also shoot your OWN VIDEO. You will work with your partner again, but you will each shoot your own unique project. I am allowing 4 full classes to do this project, so you should have plenty of time. Your partner can help you when you are taking photos, but you have to do the iMovie work BY YOURSELF!!

But there are three additional requirements.

1. You must switch mediums. Meaning, we already did claymation, you cannot do it again, you must try something else.

2. You may not tell the same story....so if you had a story about space aliens eating a dog that are eventually killed by the dog's owner, you have to tell a different story.

3. You must center your second creation around a central figure that is clearly definable. You must create a "character" and the story must be about something they do. For example: you watched a video about candy and there was a specific blue M&M that was separate from the rest of the M&Ms and you watched its story as it moved around trying to find its friends before it was final eaten by a human. The central character is the blue M&M. You need something like that.

4. You must have at least 2 different camera angles on this one.

Everything else is the same.

1. You must answer the planning portion on your Google Site.

2. You must create a project and share it on your Google Site.

3. You must complete the reflection on your Google Site.

Part 1 - PLANNING

Now that you know what you are going to be doing on a new page on your Google Site called Animation Project Planning, please answer the following questions:

1. Think about what you have at your home, what might you use as your character(s) or subject?

2. Now think about your “story” you might tell or the sequence of events you want to share. What do you think you might try to do?

3. What is the purpose of the story board?

4. What are at least two programs/apps you can use to create a story board?

5. What is one movie that you have seen that utilizes stop motion animation? (HINT: you can do a Google search to get a pretty comprehensive list of them)

Now it's time to make a story board. The story board is a guide for what will happen in your animated video. You have two options to make these story boards. I strongly recommend the first option as it will make your life much simpler to meet the requirements and probably won't take you as long. You will need to create a story board of 7-15 frames.

Part 2 - STORY BOARD

Now it's time to make a story board. The story board is a guide for what will happen in your animated video. You have two options to make these story boards. I strongly recommend the first option as it will make your life much simpler to meet the requirements and probably won't take you as long. You will need to create a story board of 7-15 frames.

Option #1

You will get paper and colored pencils from me. I do NOT expect highly detailed drawings. These are sketches to show what will happen in your video. You may create 2 "boards" on a single sheet of paper if you would like. You will each need to turn in 4 -15 sheets of paper to represent your Story Board. There is a sample video below for those of you who don't not feel like you can draw very well. I found it helped me when I made mine because I am not that great at drawing.

You will also need to take photos of your individual story boards and then transfer those photos to your Google Drive and from there onto your Google Site. You have done this in the past, this should not be complicated.

Option #2

For those of you who like to create things electronically, I am open to using different computer-based programs to make a story board. For example, you could create a series of sketches in Google Draw which is located in your Google Drive, or using https://sketch.io/sketchpad/

If you have another app or program you would like to use, I am fine with that. The expectations are the same, you will need to create a 7-15 "page" story board and I will need to be able to see the sequence on your Google Site. That means you ultimately need to get them out of those programs as a .JPEG or a .PNG most likely. If you use a program that doesn't allow for that, you could alternatively take screen shots of each "page" of your story board and then place those on your Google Site.

I am not a tech expert in every program, so it is on you to figure out how to achieve what I expect to see on your Google Site. No exceptions.

If you plan your Story Board based on one idea and you eventually create a completely different animated video, I will be fine with that. You can plan one thing and do another.

Part 3 - Create the Stop Motion Video using Life Lapse or a similar product

Remember it must be 20 seconds long!!

I am expecting to see your best work here - there should be no flickering if possible. You should have at least 2 different camera angles. You should be very aware of shadows, reflections, background activities, etc. I should be able to focus on your subject and the story you are telling about them. This was my biggest complaint about your first efforts.

Part 4 – Reflection

Now that you have finished your project, it is time to reflect upon what you created.

On a new page on your Google Site on a page called Animation Project Reflection please answer the following questions:

Questions

1. What aspects of your video turned out well? Explain your answer.

2. What aspects of your video didn't turn out as well as you hoped? Explain your answer.

3. Explain the parts of the project, as a whole, that were easier to complete?

4. Explain what parts of the project, as a whole, were more difficult to complete?

5. What App, website, or program did you use to make your video?

6. Would you recommend that App, website or program to a friend who was assigned a similar task?

7. If you could do your project again, what would you change or do again?

8. On a scale of 1-10 how much did you enjoy this project? Explain your answer and what you would recommend the teacher do to make the project better for future students
